    Sun Safety Awareness

Last updated 2 days 5 hours ago

Skin cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in the United States, affecting both men and women equally. In order to reduce the rising rates of skin cancer from overexposure to the ultraviolet (UV) rays of the sun, the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention has designated the Friday before Memorial Day as “Don’t Fry Day” to encourage sun safety awareness and to remind people to protect their skin while enjoying the outdoors. It’s extremely difficult to fully protect ourselves from harmful UV rays. However, the National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention recommends doing the following to reduce your risk of developing skin cancer:

    • Do Not Burn or Tan
    • Seek Shade
    • Wear Sun-Protective Clothing
    • Generously Apply Sunscreen
    • Use Extra Caution near Water, Snow and Sand
    • Get Vitamin D Safely

In Texas, the heat can be excruciating and the rays here are very difficult on the skin, which may increase your risk of skin cancer. Kelsey-Seybold dermatologists recommend using an SPF 30 moisturizer every day. Watch the above video to hear some great tips on protecting your skin from the sun’s UV rays from Kelsey-Seybold dermatologists. Also, remember to schedule your annual skin exam by a Kelsey-Seybold dermatologist for those areas of the skin that are difficult to see, which may be affected by skin cancer. A person should seek out a dermatologist if they notice a new or changing spot on their skin that continues to change over time, if they develop a rash that persists and with any skin, hair or nail-related questions. Pregnant? 4 Questions to Ask Your Obstetrician at Your First Visit

    Last updated 24 days ago

Whether you are a veteran mom or a first-time mom-to-be, pregnancy is an exciting and life-changing event. Prenatal care from the best doctor you can find is vital to the overall health and success of your pregnancy. As soon as you find out you’re expecting, schedule a prenatal appointment at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. Make sure you ask your OB/GYN these four questions:

    1. Are there any special medications or supplements I should or should not be taking?

Your doctor will likely recommend that you take a prenatal vitamin supplement. He or she may also give you a list of over-the-counter medications that are safe to take during pregnancy, along with those that are not safe. Certain medicines, such as bismuth subsalicylate for upset stomach, can cause harm to your baby.

    2. Can I continue to exercise? Which types of exercises are safe?

Physical fitness is as important during pregnancy as any other time, but certain abdominal exercises should not be performed during the first trimester. Your physician will also want to consider your overall health, as well as your activity level prior to pregnancy, to determine how much exercise is safe for you.

    3. What tests will I need to undergo during my pregnancy?

Your local physician will want to monitor your urine, weight and blood pressure regularly. You’ll also likely be screened for potential genetic problems, gestational diabetes, Group B Strep and other conditions that your doctor feels relevant to you. Of course, you will also have at least one ultrasound where you will hear your baby’s heartbeat and find out the sex, if you want to know.

    4. Are there any limitations to my daily activities?

Most women can maintain their daily activity level safely, but your local doctor may caution against heavy lifting. If you’re a high-risk pregnancy, there may be other considerations, so be sure to discuss this in detail with your doctor at your appointment.

If you’re looking for an excellent OB/GYN in the Houston area, call Kelsey-Seybold Clinic at (713) 469-3143 to schedule your prenatal appointment today. Find a local doctor at Kelsey-Seybold clinic, with more than 20 locations in Houston.

Common Causes of Irregular Menstrual Cycles

    Last updated 1 month ago

Most irregular periods have simple causes and have simple solutions. If you are experiencing irregular or missed periods, it’s usually a good idea to visit your local doctor’s office.

    What is Regular?

Menstrual cycles are not the same for every woman. While the average cycle lasts 28 days, some women cycle more or less quickly. Before you become concerned about irregular periods, think about what is regular for you. If you only have periods every 2 or 3 months, and have for some time, this is probably no cause for concern. However, it’s always a good idea to speak with your local physician  OB/GYN just to be sure.

    If You Are Irregular:

Many circumstances can cause a woman’s menstrual cycle to become irregular. You may experience irregular menstrual cycles if you:

    • Recently had a drastic weight change.
    • Have been under a great deal of emotional stress.
    • Participate in extremely heavy exercise.
    • Are taking certain medications or are undergoing chemotherapy.
    • Recently had a child, miscarriage, D&C or are currently breastfeeding.
    • Are a heavy user of drugs, alcohol or caffeine.
    • Are malnourished
    • Have uterine or ovarian abnormalities such as cysts, fibroids or polyps.
    • Are entering menopause.

Visit us at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic if you are looking for a recommended doctor to help you with your women’s health, or any other health needs.
